Explore the art of photography and filmmaking at the Museum of Photographic Arts’ Summer Camps. These hands-on workshops provide students, with the opportunity to create movies, produce many photos, learn techniques of photography and filmmaking, and take part in many more exciting projects working in groups and individually! MoPA welcomes students of all levels of ability and experience. MoPA is a proud participant in the Balboa Park Camp Collaboration. Scholarships are available for those that qualify.
Moving Pictures I: Filmmaking for Elementary School Students SOLD OUT**
M-F, July 21 – August 1, Two-week Camp
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Grades 3-6 / Ages 8-12
Produce a movie from start to finish. Working in groups, students will learn how to make up stories, turn them into moving pictures, and edit movies. No experience is necessary. All equipment provided including digital video cameras, and computers to edit with. Your child will discover a brand new skill as well as improve their writing and performance skills. Students will also get to watch their final group product in MoPA’s state-of-the-art theater.

Light Writers I: Photography for Elementary School Students
M-F, July 21- August 1, Two-week Camp
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Grades 4-6 / Ages 9-12
During this camp, campers will be exposed to a wide variety of image making techniques (including alternative process and digital imagery). They will learn the basic techniques of making interesting and eye-catching images (including vantage point, the elements of design, and the rule of thirds). The class will visit exciting and picturesque locations throughout Balboa Park, including the San Diego Zoo, the canyons, ponds, and other natural attractions. Campers are encouraged to bring their own digital cameras and download cable to camp.

Moving Pictures II: Filmmaking for Junior High Students
M-F, July 21 – August 1, Two-week Camp
9:00a.m.- 12:00 p.m.
Grades 6-8 / Ages 11-14
Discover what makes movies great! Campers will watch movies in MoPA’s state-of-the-art theater that exemplify valuable filmmaking techniques. Class discussions and instruction will lead us to working in groups to make movies in the beautiful locations throughout Balboa Park. Students of all levels of experience will work together to learn how to create their movies.

Light Writers II: Photography for Junior High Students
M-F, July 21 – 25, One-week Camp
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Grades 6-8 / Ages 11-14
This camp will explore the not-so-basics of extremely creative image-making! Campers will use alternative and digital processes to produce a variety of unique images. The class will also go on photographic explorations all around Balboa Park. Campers will be given an opportunity to express what they would like to learn about photography and instructors will do their best to implement those ideas. The camp will culminate in an exhibition of the campers' artwork. Campers are encouraged to bring their own digital cameras and download cable to camp.

Moving Pictures III BEG: Beginning Filmmaking for High School Students
M-F, August 4-15, Two-week Camp
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Grades 9 – 12 / Ages 14-18
Campers that are interested in filmmaking but who have not had the opportunity to study the art form will discover cinema, and collaborate to create group projects. Balboa Park’s architecture and natural setting will provide the backdrop for the campers’ movie projects. All equipment provided including digital video cameras, and computers to edit with.

Moving Pictures III ADV: Advanced Filmmaking for High School Students
M-F, August 4- 15, Two-week Camp
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Grades 9 – 12 / Ages 14-18
Campers who have been to our Camps before or have a background in film will enjoy improving their skills, as they collaborate in small groups to create unique film projects. Balboa Park’s architecture and natural setting will provide beautiful locations for campers to practice and evolve their skills. Campers will benefit from group discussions and critiques with an experienced film instructor. All equipment provided including digital video cameras, and computers to edit with.

Older students who may not have any photography experience are the ideal fit for this camp. Campers will be introduced to a wide variety of photographic techniques, including historical alternative process and digital photography as well as some basic tools of image making (vantage points, elements of design, the rule of thirds). Campers will use Balboa Park as their subjects, creating unique images which will be displayed at the end of the camp. Campers are encouraged to bring their own digital cameras and download cable to camp.

Grades 9-12 / Ages 14-18
A valuable experience for college applications, this camp is ideal for older students with experience in photography as an art form. Campers will explore alternative photographic techniques and discover ideas while focusing on their own specific interests in photography. Campers will be given the opportunity to choose a specific project that they will focus on during the duration of the camp. The week culminates with a student exhibition of their project. Campers are encouraged to bring their own digital cameras and download cable to camp.
