Today’s teens are bombarded by the media with narrow definitions of beauty and ideal body image, causing distorted perceptions and dissatisfaction with their bodies. To address this issue, MoPA's Education Department was inspired to create Beyond Beauty: What is True Beauty?. The goal of the project was to empower teens to find their own definitions of beauty, increase their self esteem, and become more critical about the media’s intent.

The high school curriculum Beyond Beauty was created by the Education Department in collaboration with the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Diego, San Diego Museum of Art, and the County Office of Education. Teens from the Boys and Girls Clubs participated in a multi-week program that resulted in public service announcements in English and Spanish and high school curriculum. The teen-produced PSAs were widely broadcast on the County’s ITV station.

The Beyond Beauty: What is Real Beauty? curriculum was designed for psychology, sociology, history, and art history classes. The curriculum features 5 lesson plans that address and analyze how the media and cultural influences affect body image. With challenging activities, a supplemental DVD, and original images, this curriculum is designed to provoke a thoughtful and engaging discussion about this incredibly relevant topic.

Beyond Beauty was generously funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, Weingart Foundation, Thomas Ackerman Foundation, Qualcomm, and the Kenneth and Eileen Norris Foundation.pad
